13 May 2010# 8 Zulu Song & Dance. This was to be held on 6 May but has unfortunately been cancelled until Thursday 24 June. In Term 1, the library had a focus on the NZ author Margaret Mahy. We had a Margaret Mahy poster competition which was won by Te Akonga Crawford Room 13, with runner up prizes for Caesar Pound Room 13, Wesley Osman Room 11, Tasneem Morgan Room 10, Maxine NiaNia Room 10, Natasha Gunawan Room 10. Prizewinners will receive books.
In Term 3 the theme for the library is going to be Pirates. We are keen to have a pirate’s chest (could be a wooden box with a lid or an old trunk). Sometimes people call these blanket boxes. If you have something suitable which you could lend or donate we would love to hear from you. If it is in a shabby condition don’t worry as I am sure students would enjoy decorating it.
Students Reading Logs We are delighted with the enthusiastic response from the students. When a student has read 50 books their photo will be taken and put on the Reading Wall of Fame and they will receive a book prize. They can continue reading and recording their books. In the last week of Term 2 prizes will be given to the students who have read the most books. BREATHING SPACE WORKSHOP Understanding your anger—A workshop for parents. 7pm—10pm, Wednesday 26 May. NATIONAL STANDARDS UPDATE We will endeavour to keep you very updated with what we as a school are doing around the National Standards. Ted, Kerry and Mike will be attending seminars over this term. From the information covered so far it appears we are progressing with our implementation in a considered and effective manner. Our new Board and Leadership team will be working with an external facilitator to review our progress. Over the next two terms all teachers will have training to become familiar with the standards and moderation processes. It is anticipated that we will need most of this year and next to become fully familiar and confident in accurately assessing against the National Standards. The Ministry of Education is working hard to support our work by analyzing and matching assessment tools to the standards. Once that is completed we will be able to use the tools to report to you as required. The reports that you will get this term are just the beginning of the process and you will see some changes but we still will have a lot of work to do. PARENT INTERVIEWS These will be held on : Thursday 17 June—interviews from 12pm—5pm. Friday 18 June—interviews from 7.30am—5pm. These are 1/2 hour interviews.
